Con la seguente lettera, formalmente indirizzata al management e ai dipendenti di Apple, ma idealmente rivolta a tutti i consumatori e agli appassionati del marchio da lui stesso creato, Steve Jobs ha ufficialmente posto fine al suo percorso come CEO di Apple.
Poichè "è arrivato il giorno in cui non è più possibile assolvere ai doveri di CEO di Apple e soddisfare le aspettative che si addicono a un simile ruolo". Ed è lui stesso a fare il nome di Tim Cook come nuovo CEO, nell'ambito del "piano di successione" già da tempo stabilito e condiviso con tutti i dirigenti.
Non sono infatti una novità i problemi di salute di Jobs, che ne hanno progressivamente limitato il tempo a disposizione, non impedendogli, tuttavia, di presenziare agli eventi finalizzati alla presentazione dei prodotti di punta, fino al passaggio di testimone avvenuto oggi.
Ma niente paura: secondo il suo autorevole parere, "i giorni più luminosi e innovativi per Apple devono ancora arrivare", anche perchè Jobs, nonostante tutto, continuerà a essere parte dell'azienda, anche se "con un nuovo ruolo".

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
